The project revitalized a 9-km stretch of the Ostravice River (in the districts of Hrušov, Kunčice, Kunčičky, Muglinov, Vítkovice, Slezská Ostrava and Hrabůvka) to rectify damage caused by coal mining between the mid-19th century and the end of the 20th century. A 50-centimetre layer of sediment was deposited in the riverbed as a result of mining activity; the project removed these sediments and channelled waste water from the Paskov industrial zone into the Odra River, thus improving water quality in the Ostravice River. The project also included various compensatory measures for aquatic species living in the river and nearby habitats.
