The Heřmanice pond: An exotic hidden world in the heart of Ostrava
Just a short distance from Ostrava’s city centre is a true hidden gem – five beautiful ponds with large reed-beds and wetland meadows. This oasis of wild nature provides a habitat for an amazing 250 bird species, making it a mecca for ornithologists. There is a nature trail with panels providing information on the natural ecosystem and the fascinating history of the site. There is also a rest area for visitors and a birdwatching hide. The ponds are unique thanks to their high mineral content (particularly boron and iodine), and they are a popular spot for fishing, with wooden fishing platforms in the middle of the ponds accessed by long footbridges. There are around seventy of these platforms, which lend the ponds a strangely exotic (almost Asian) atmosphere.
