Insect day in Zoo Ostrava

Insects are a very successful group of animals. They account for more than half (almost one million) of all animal species described so far. Every year, thousands of new species are discovered. On the other hand, these six-legged creatures – not just bees and butterflies – have been in rapid decline in recent years. Saturday’s program at Zoo Ostrava will present the variety of the insect world and the dangers it faces.

Come to Zoo Ostrava on Saturday, May 19, and learn about the colourful world of insects and see that this group of animals deserves our attention and protection. Rapid extinction of a number of organisms has been alarming in recent years. This does not only include bees and butterflies, but also many other insects, resulting in a decline in the number of species of birds which need these insects as an important component of their food.

The program will take place from 11am to 4pm. Children and adults can look forward to a variety of insect activities to familiarize themselves with a number of insects, their way of life, and why insects are so successful and widespread. You will also learn how each of us can, often very easily, contribute to the protection of these small animals who have an important place on Earth despite the fact that many of them are not among the most favourite creatures…

At different venues around the Zoo (not only this Saturday), you can also take inspiration from concrete measures that can be produced and installed in your own garden, school garden, etc. For example, you can see a Beetle Nest raising awareness of the importance of deadwood for the development of a variety of beetles and other insects, Bee Trail presenting the importance of bees as irreplaceable pollinators, Butterfly Meadow with blooming flowers representing food not only for butterflies, etc. There are also several insect hotels and other insect shelters around the Zoo. Some of the insect species also like to live in birdhouses…
