After necessary modifications, coke battery No 5 and its integral parts will open to the public.
The now-inaccessible area of the national cultural monument in Lower Vítkovice is going to have its interior and exterior renovated. Visitors will be able to become familiar with the technological part designed for coke production. This part consists of the following structures: cooling tower (01), steel structure for the maintenance of the charger (02), discharger (03), cooling car (04) and tour route areas (05). Structure Coal treatment plant (06) will not be made accessible, only a partly damaged single-storey building will be removed and the cleared site will be made accessible locally.
Structures previously used for the production of coke are currently defunct.
The renovation will not fundamentally change the architectural look. The renovation will include, in particular, adjustments concerning the safety of use and improved comfort of visitors. From the visual point of view, rust deposits and all disturbing and non-functional structures and items will be removed.
Currently a tender for a public works contract is being announced.
And what did the coke production process look like?
The entire coal coking process consisted of charging coking batteries, coking in its chambers, which, after complete carbonization of coal, was followed by the discharge of coke by means of a discharger into a cooling car, which took the coke into a cooling tower where the hot coke was cooled with water.
