Revitalization of the area around the castle to rectify damage caused by former coal mining and to prepare the site for leisure use.

The purpose of this project was to rectify damage caused by previous coal mining to the north of the castle (between Frýdecká St. and Podzámčí St.). Coal waste deposits were cleared in order to prevent surface water from penetrating into the contaminated subsoil, thus preventing contaminated groundwater from leaching into the Ostravice and Lučina rivers. This has made the site suitable for new use as a leisure area with sports and recreational facilities and cultural venues. New pedestrian walkways and car parking areas have been built, and extensive ground levelling and landscaping work in the vicinity of the castle has created a more attractive visitor environment.
