Students show off their technical and scientific knowledge in an annual competition

Can you explain binary code, chemical colour reactions or the effects of electromagnetic forces… all in just four minutes? In a recent competition run by Ostrava’s technical university, local secondary school students proved that they can!

On Monday 23 April, students from Ostrava’s secondary schools visited the university to participate in the 5th annual technical knowledge competition ‘Improve Your Technique’. The participants’ task was simple but very challenging: to give a 4-minute presentation to their fellow students (and the competition jury) on any topic related to mathematics, physics, chemistry or technical fields. The jury evaluated the presentations, deciding whether they were factually accurate, easy to understand, and interesting for the audience. The teachers and the students at participating schools work very hard indeed – and the quality of the presentations gets better every year. During the first few years of the competition, most of the presentations focused on physics and chemistry, but now the students often choose relatively complex experimental topics or opt for mathematical and technical presentations. Our thanks go not only to the winning students, but to everybody who participated – and of course their teachers too. Our competition is not just about the winners – it also benefits all those participants who are keen to learn and to broaden their technical and scientific knowledge.
