Taste the quality: Ostrava’s water meets the toughest standards

The AQUATEST company has recently conducted an independent test of tap water in towns and cities throughout the Czech Republic – and Ostrava’s citizens can be delighted with the results. The city’s tap water is well within legal limits for drinking water, and in the case of nitrates and nitrites it meets special legal standards for water that is suitable for baby formula preparation.

The company – which holds full accreditation to carry out laboratory testing of tap water – took samples of tap water from fifteen locations: one location in each of the 12 Czech regional capitals (including Ostrava), two locations in Prague, and one in the town of Mladá Boleslav. The samples were analyzed for microbiological content, heavy metals, volatile substances and pesticides. A radiological analysis was also carried out, and free chlorine was measured at the point of sampling. Ostrava’s tap water is well within legal limits for drinking water, and in the case of nitrates and nitrites it meets special legal standards for water that is suitable for baby formula preparation.

In order to ensure the highest possible quality, the company recommends that the tap should be run for a short while before drinking. If the water at first looks milky or cloudy, this is not due to chlorine; it is simply the presence of dissolved air, which will soon disappear. It is not recommended to drink hot water straight from the tap; it is not designated as drinking water, and it may contain additives (such as anticorrosives).

The Ostrava Water and Sewerage Company (OVAK a.s.) conducts over 2700 analyses of drinking water every year at its in-house accredited laboratory – and OVAK’s own tests confirm the results of the AQUATEST analysis.
