The Smart Transport System

Ostrava’s Smart Transport System consists of four main components, whose purpose is to make transport safer and more effective, to reduce congestion, and thus to reduce negative environmental impacts.

Support for public transport:

This is the first component in the system, implemented in conjunction with Ostrava’s road management company (OKAS). The system improves the efficiency of public transport in the city, optimizing safety and traffic flow while also giving priority to public transport vehicles – and thus bringing environmental benefits.

Smart stops:

This is the second component in the system, implemented as a part of Ostrava’s Integrated Transport System (ODIS). It involves purchasing, installing and operating ‘live’ information panels at public transport stops, giving passengers constantly updated information on when the next tram/bus/trolleybus services will be departing from a particular stop.

Onboard computers and smart traffic control and passenger systems in public transport vehicles:

This component of the system is coordinated by Ostrava’s public transport corporation.

City centre car parking navigation systems:

This system helps drivers to find available public parking spaces in the city centre. It was launched on 1 July 2010. The system collects information on occupancy levels at public parking facilities in Ostrava city centre, and it displays details of available spaces on digital panels at 13 entry-points to the city centre, plus points within the city centre itself (total 30 panels). As part of the system, a website was created giving up-to-date information on the traffic situation in the city.
