Rectification of damage caused by former coal mining and subsidence – Žabník flood defence system in Ostrava-Koblov protecting the area from 100-year flooding of the Odra River.

This project created a flood barrier protecting Žabník (part of Ostrava’s Koblov district), an area with houses, gardens and agricultural land, from floodwaters of the Odra River. In the past, this location suffered from frequent flooding even if the level of the river was only slightly above normal.

The new flood barrier is made of earth. It is 860 metres long and its height varies from 1.7–3.9 metres depending on the level of the surrounding terrain. As part of the project, local roads were re-routed, new roads were built, the surface water runoff drainage system was modernized, and utilities networks were also re-routed. Next to the barrier is a pumping station; if flooding occurs, it will pump surface water from Žabník into the Odra. A service road and cycle path run along the top of the barrier.
