Cheaper public transport tickets planned for students in Ostrava

Ostrava’s integrated public transport system (ODIS) – which coordinates public transport throughout almost the entire Moravian-Silesian Region – is launching a new pricing structure from 1 February.

The most important change is the reduction in the price of tickets for students (age 15–26) covering the entire city of Ostrava. A 5-month season ticket – currently costing 879 CZK – will now cost just 553 CZK; this means that the price of a student ticket (age 15–26) will be exactly the same as a ticket for children (age 6–15). The reductions also affect 90-day student tickets and standard student single-journey tickets for zone 78 (Ostrava XXL: the city plus the surrounding area).

There will also be a new 12-month ticket for zone 77 (Ostrava city) for children (age 6–15) and students (age 15–26). This ticket will cover a standard period from 1 September to 31 August of the following year. The price of this new 12-month ticket is 1 106 CZK – double the price of a 5-month ticket, so children and students effectively get two extra months’ travel free of charge during the holiday season (July and August).

To give children and students these two months’ extra free travel in the upcoming summer (2018), a special exemption is being introduced: from 1 February 2018, instead of buying a 5-month ticket for zone 77 (Ostrava city), it will be possible to buy a 7-month ticket (valid up to the end of August 2018) for the same price.

Other new types of long-term and multi-day tickets

It will now be possible to buy 7-day tickets not only using a transferable ODIS card (containing no personal data), but also with a standard ODIS card (registered to the holder). New types of transferable ODIS cards will be introduced (180 days and 365 days), which will be ideal for companies to purchase for their employees.

Tickets for extra passengers purchased using an ODIS card

The current 30-minute and 60-minute tickets for extra passengers purchased using an ODIS card will be replaced by a new 45-minute ticket costing 20 CZK (the current price of the 30-minute ticket). The same system will also apply to tickets purchased using a bank card.

The ODIS system incorporates 11 different transport companies: the city public transport corporations in Ostrava and Opava, seven bus companies (Arriva Morava, TQM-holding, Osoblažská dopravní společnost, ČSAD Frýdek-Místek, ČSAD Havířov, ČSAD Karviná and ČSAD Vsetín), plus two rail companies (Czech Railways, GW Train Regio).
