Partial trolleybuses are now operating, with eco-friendly minibuses planned during the spring
On Sunday 4 March 2018, Ostrava introduced a new type of trolleybus, which brings considerable advantages compared with standard types. Known as “partial trolleybuses”, the new vehicles have batteries which enable them to cover part of their route in places without overhead power lines. The batteries are charged up during the parts of the journey when the standard overhead lines are in use. The City Public Transport Corporation (DPO) has purchased 10 partial trolleybuses, which will be used partly to substitute for other vehicles during maintenance work, and partly on new routes incorporating sections without overhead lines.
New routes for eco-friendly minibuses
The City Public Transport Corporation (DPO) is planning to open two new bus routes in the near future. Route 90 will connect Poruba with the planetarium in Krásné Pole. Route 99 will be a circuit through the city centre, calling at the City Hospital; it will also pass through the central pedestrian zone and the main square (Masarykovo náměstí).
According to Aleš Hladký from the corporation, the routes will be launched in the spring, once the corporation has purchased a fleet of new eco-friendly minibuses.
Route 99 will feature electric minibuses, and route 90 will have three electric minibuses and three gas-powered minibuses.
The new bus stops in the city centre will look rather different from the standard stops everywhere else in Ostrava, as Aleš Hladký explained: “The central municipal district is very keen to preserve the historical appearance of the old city centre, so the new bus stops will be designed to fit into their surroundings both in their design and colour scheme.”
